The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) is preparing clergy in Malawi to diffuse tension that may arise after the May 19 elections due to differences over the results.
PAC is a mother body of all religious groups in the country. Speaking at a meeting in the commercial capital of Blantyre, PAC chairperson Fr. Boniface Tamani said religious leaders have a duty to prepare the minds of both presidential candidates and supporters that there can only be one winner in an election.
"We do not want people to deliberately reject the results because they want to go into government through a power sharing deal," said Tamani.
Tamani said it is not in PAC's interest to see Malawi going through the Kenya and Zimbabwe post election scenarios.
Deputy British High Commissioner Wendy Freeman challenged the religious leaders to use their collective voice to prevent conflict.
