Malawi president Bingu wa Mutharika, has made a rare public declaration that he would accept results should he fail to make it during this year's may 19 general elections.
President Mutharika is going into the elections seeking his second term of office. He won in 2004 under the United Democratic front ticket. Before dumping the party that ushered him to power and formed his own party Democratic progressive party DPP.
DPP has never participated in any general election and this year's election will be a litmus test for its strength and popularity it has gained in the past five years.
"I would like to say this. Not only do pledge to free fair and credible elections but also want non violent elections.. I do not want any one to be intimidated either by political party or a group. I want everyone to be free to select what they want.
"And indeed at the end of the day when Malawians will say this is the type of leadership they want and by definition that's the road they want to take towards 2014, I will be the first one to accept."
