Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) has given up on plans to have its own parallel tally centre after government opposed to the idea.
MESN chairperson Aloysius Nthenda told AEP on Tuesday that despite pressure from several organizations to have a parallel tally centre, MESN has reversed its plan to have the centre and that he was surprised to hear President Bingu wa Mutharika talk about with African Union Commission chairperson Jean Ping during a dinner at Sanjika Palace on Saturday.
"We shall not have parallel tally centre although the matter keeps coming in several meetings to have it," said Nthenda.
Early this year, Nthenda said MESN would have its own parallel centre despite government opposing to the idea. This means that there will be only one tally centre by the Malawi Electoral Commission.
Mutharika said the parallel tally centre notion would cause problems, especially in a situation where there would be two names as victors instead of one person. He said in such a scenario "there would be war".
"This is a sovereign nation. Let's work with the Electoral Commission. Give them a chance. Malawi won't accept a parallel tally centre," he said.---AEP
