MEC photographers protest over unpaid allowances

MEC photographers who were hired to take part in the electoral process on Tuesday caused havoc at MEC offices in Blantyre when they protested demanding for what they termed as 'the unpaid allowances'.

The photographers who gathered at MEC sung songs calling for the authorities to release their allowances which have accumulated from 6 April 2009.

"We want our money. We have not been paid for the 14 days the Commission hired us to do the job for them. We only got our allowances for the first five days of the voters verification exercise but when the period was extended for another five days we never got our money.

"To make matters worse the Commission also hired us nine days ago to help them rectify the messy voters roll and they have not paid us also," explained Joseph Mkuziwaduka one of the disgrunltled photographers.

Mkuziwaduka further explained that the authorities at MEC have been playing down the photographers demand.

"We have asked them to give us our money if they want us to continue working with them. If they don't, they should not expect us to continue working for them," he said.

In a separate interview Chief Elections Officer David Bandawe said the Commission was processing the photographers allowances.
