No DPP alliance with PPM says Bingu, blasts Katsonga

President Bingu wa Mutharika has effectively dissolved the electoral alliance between his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and People Progressive Movement (PPM) of Mark Katsonga Phiri during a public rally.

Speaking at Mwanza-Neno on his stop during a whistle-stop campaign tour from Lilongwe to Blantyre, Mutharika said he does not recognize any alliance with PPM of Katsonga and national chairman Aleke Banda.

Katsonga who is president of PPM did not present nomination papers to Electoral Commission to run for May 19 presidency and endorsed Mutharika as joint PPM-DPP candidate.

Mutharika also recognized the endorsement and has been touting the backing of PPM during the launch of his campaign in Blantyre and during various meetings.

But President Mutharika who seeks a second term during the election which faces stiff completion from MCP's John Tembo backed by UDF and former president Bakili Muluzi said that he does not need Katsonga.

"Sindifuna kuphatikizana ndi kapamba wina aliyense pa kampeni. Ife a DPP tiwina tokha (I don't want to forge in any alliance with anybody. The DPP will win the elections single-handily)," said highly charged Mutharika.

He was addressing the crowds in the constituency which was being held by Katsonga's and where he is also contesting on PPM ticket.

Mutharika told the supporters that he does not need any backing from Katsonga and PPM.

"I don't need him," said Mutharika.

He then introduced former rights activist, Reen Kachere as parliamentary candidate for his DPP.

Mutharika said DPP government has brought a lot of development in Mwanza-Neno and said Katsonga has not contributed anything.

He warned the PPM leader against claiming any credit for the development in Neno.
